Marina Bay: walk the city’s great waterfront
The skyline has a public front door.
Marina Bay is a composition rather than one landmark. Begin with the Merlion and follow the waterfront towards the Esplanade, pausing where the skyline opens across the water. From here the towers, hotel roofline and promenade form a city-sized theatre, but the useful discovery is how much of it belongs to pedestrians.
Continue towards the Helix Bridge if the weather and your energy allow. The changing angles make a stronger encounter than remaining at the first busy photographic spot. Look back at the older civic district as well as towards the spectacular newer buildings. Singapore’s identity as a port and financial centre is visible here, although the polished waterfront tells only part of that history.
A rooftop observation deck is an optional supplement, with its own ticket and weather considerations. You do not need it to understand the bay. Time the walk for late afternoon, take shelter when tropical rain arrives, and return outside for the lights. The real extravagance is allowing an unhurried hour by the water after everyone has taken their photographs. Combine the walk with Gardens by the Bay, while keeping enough time to experience each properly.
